zirconium-crown

The highest-quality crowns and bridges of the 21st century are made of zirconium.

Metal-frame crowns have the appropriate strength and durability, but they left the problem of metal allergies and the question of aesthetics unresolved. The solution was provided by zirconium-oxide, a material used in dentistry since the late 1990’s. It is as strong as metal, but without all of its disadvantageous properties.

What are the advantages of zirconium ceramic prostheses?

– metal-free prostheses, so allergic reactions do not occur
– strong and reliable, provideing stability in the long run
– high bending resistance (5 times higher than that of natural teeth)
– extremely hard, can even cut steal
– perfectly fits on the tooth neck and the surface of the gum as the frame is fabricated with computer aided design and manufacture (CAD/CAM), the highest precision technology existing today
-the only metal-free crown suitable for not only solo crowns, but also for bridging longer tooth absences
– provides a perfect aesthetic effect
– the colour of the zirconium frame and the ceramic cover can be perfectly matched to the colour of the original teeth
– it doesn’t necessarily let light through, so it can be appropriate for covering root filled, greyish teeth
– no discolouration over the years

What is the process of a zirconium crown placement?

1st appointment: With local anaesthesia, the dentist prepares (grinds) the tooth with an advanced technique, called shoulder polishing, in order to prevent any irritation of the gum under the future crown. Then an impression is taken of the prepared tooth. At the end of the first visit, a temporary crown can be placed.

The imprint is sent to the dental lab where a plaster model is made. It will be sent to a milling centre where a laser scans it, thus the template becomes digitized. The milling machine mills the frame of the crown from a zirconium-oxide block. The frame is sent back to the lab where the technician covers it with ceramic layers.

2nd appointment: The temporary crown is removed and the permanent one is bonded into place with dental cement.
